Amid row between the two ruling parties, PSD and PNL regarding the date of the presidential elections, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu invited the leaders of all political parties on Friday to establish together the election calendar.

“This is the right approach and not changing a minister who has been forced by his own party not to initiate a previously agreed legislative act. I will not respond to the challenges of triggering a governmental crisis and instability in Romania”, declared Ciolacu.

The Prime Minister again referred to the fact that the PNL does not respect its commitments in the Coalition, a fact that generates a lack of confidence in the political class.

“All of us here, regardless of the party we belong to, have a huge responsibility to ensure the stability of this country. And this also means honoring your commitments. It is not a matter of one term or another for the conduct of the elections, but of trust. Hopping on the calendar affects this trust between partners. And it must stop! As Prime Minister of Romania, I have the obligation not to favor a party or a coalition. Today we practically leave the previously established electoral calendar, being the last day on which we could pass the H.G. establishing the date of the elections. That’s why, from Monday, together with the two deputy prime ministers, I will invite the leaders of all political parties to establish together the election calendar. This is the right approach and not changing a minister who has been forced by his own party not to initiate a previously agreed piece of legislation. I will not respond to challenges to trigger a governmental crisis and instability in Romania,” said the PM.
The executive meets today, from 09:00, in a government meeting, and the government decision regarding the presidential election calendar is not found on the agenda of the publicly communicated meeting.
This decision generated tensions between the two parties that form the governing coalition as the PSD and the PNL did not agree on the date of the elections, the social democrats insisting on September, while the liberals proposed November.
