“Anti-missile shield is not targeting Russia”, PM tells interview to French TV
The anti-missile shield in Romania is not targeting Russia, PM Dacian Ciolos told an interview to LCI French TV channel on Thursday.
The Romanian premier expressed concern over the fact “that there are conflicts destabilizing the region” and explained that’s why “we must consider how we can defend ourselves in case something happens.”
“Romania is NATO’s border, we are in a region where there are conflicts that are provoked neither by Romania nor by EU countries. Russia is a big neighbor, but Romania has never taken any actions against Russia. The anti-missile system doesn’t target Russia,” PM Ciolos stressed, asked about President Putin’s recent threats against Romania.
Dacian Ciolos said that it’s Vladimir Putin the one “who took this action that prompted the situation we all know in Ukraine,” Agerpres informs.
“I am firstly concerned that there are conflicts destabilizing the region and of course we must consider how we can defend ourselves in case something happens. But if we look into history, Romania is not characterized by aggression. And it will not do this now,” the Romanian PM added.
Ciolod also stated that the upcoming NATO summit in Warsaw will debate the Alliance’s positioning on the Eastern flank. “Actions must be taken to discourage any potential conflict on NATO territory,” he concluded.
