Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu requested, on Friday, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Cătălin Predoiu, to prepare the draft of the government decision regarding the presidential elections, noting that, following the decisions of the coalition, next week the date of the first round of voting will be set on September 15 or 29.

“Following the decisions made in the governing coalition, I request Mr. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs, Cătălin Predoiu, to prepare the draft of the government decision regarding the presidential elections. Next week we will determine which of the two dates – September 15 or 29 – will be was holding the first round”, stated Ciolacu, at the beginning of the Government meeting.

Marcel Ciolacu, who is also chairman of the ruling party Social Democratic Party (PSD) declared on Friday that it is out of the question for him, as prime minister, to move the presidential elections to December.

“If we want to go with a trick, the trick stops at the gate of the Victoria Palace. The government represents something other than the tricks and calculations of some electoral people”, he also stated.

The PSD president was asked after the PSD leadership meeting if it is out of the question for the PSD to move the date of the presidential elections to December.

“It is excluded for Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. I can no longer look into the eyes of any other leader, party president from Romania, when I came from the position of prime minister, after a decision made in the Coalition, statutory and correct, to come and tell the Romanians that in office in the interest of one party or another, I, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, am changing the date of the elections. To understand why they exclude this option”, said the PSD president.

The government was supposed to adopt the decision with the calendar of the presidential elections in the meeting on Thursday, but postponed it after the deadlock in the Coalition with the liberal partners on this issue.

More precisely, the National Liberal Party (PNL) wants to preserve the date of the presidential elections according to the constitutional provisions, in November and December. The reason is the fact that the idea of a tandem candidacy for president-prime minister, on the part of the two parties, failed, so there is no longer any reason to advance this election.

The liberals also say that the first round of elections would coincide with the beginning of the school year, on September 15, which would lead to the blocking of schools where there are polling stations for several days in a row, thus disrupting the educational process. In addition, according to PNL, the campaign in August would be extremely difficult to achieve, due to the weather conditions and the vacation period, which would lead to disinterest on the part of the population. Thus, they say, there would not be a sufficient debate for the most important position in the state, that of president.

The social democrats, on the other hand, say that there is already, in principle, a decision in the coalition regarding the advance of the presidential elections for September, which was also accepted by the liberals at the time it was taken.

The governing coalition is reportedly negotiating two dates for the organization of the first round of the presidential elections: September 15 or 29,  political sources told Digi24. If the first round will be on September 15, the second round will fall on September 29. If the first round will be on September 29, the second round will fall on October 13. A decision is to be taken on Tuesday in the Coalition, and the government decision regarding the presidential elections will also be adopted next week.
