Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu stated that Romania will introduce the minimum wage at the European level, an initiative that provides for equal pay for the same work. He added that the deadline to enforce this provision is November 15, 2024.

“At the European level (…) we have to enforce the European minimum wage. So, in other words, a vision at European level. In my opinion, let’s stop inventing hot water again and let’s go for a European vision, of the European Union, that for the same work there should be equal pay and we have an implementation deadline, it seems to me, on November 15”, declared Marcel Ciolacu.

Regarding construction and agricultural employees who have different salaries, if the minimum wage is increased next week, the PM said

“I had the same thing with all the partners. There was no demand for growth, you know that there is much higher. We are at 4500. Each one will come later. It was an approach from employers in the first place, then came the unions, both social partners of the Government of Romania and came with a proposal to change the minimum wage depending on branches and categories”, explained the prime minister.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced, last week, after the Tripartite Council, that from July 1, the minimum wage will increase to 3,700 lei gross. The Head of the Executive also announced that they will maintain until the end of the year the facility granted to employers regarding the 200 lei exempted from taxes.

The President of PNL, Nicolae Ciucă, stated on Tuesday, in Timişoara, that the decision to increase the minimum wage is taken, adding that there is a need to support the business environment. “It was decided that this increase should be 400 lei, with the mention that not only 200 lei, but 300 lei should remain as a non-taxable amount”, he explained. Ciucă appreciated that the minimum wage must be increased on a clear and honest basis.
