Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said in Constanta on Wednesday that he will have a discussion with Romania’s interim president Ilie Bolojan about the possible replacement of Emil Hurezeanu as foreign minister, following the postponement of Romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver program. It is a discussion that I will have with interim president Ilie Bolojan. I do not propose changes or no changes, although it is my attribute, but a different dynamic is needed in the relationship with the US,” Ciolacu said.

“I am not dissatisfied with anything in particular. It is obvious that the new policy of the US Administration, with the regaining (of the presidency) by Donald Trump, is in a different dynamic. Mr. Hurezeanu is an exceptional diplomat, a man with expertise, an excellent ambassador. I am firmly convinced that a foreign minister for Europe would be very sought after, but we live in a different dynamic. I am not dissatisfied with anything else. It is normal for us to rethink our collaboration and to come to the aid of the new US Administration,” Ciolacu declared.

The PSD leader said that “he will discuss this matter first with the interim president Ilie Bolojan”.Even if he is the interim president of Romania, the attributions in the foreign area, constitutionally, are with the president of Romania and I am firmly convinced that we will find the best solutions. I would not like us to remain with this not exactly true news that Mr. Hurezeanu is not a good foreign minister. No, we live in a different logic”, said Ciolacu.

Asked if he would dismiss Hurezeanu, Ciolacu said: “I am not dismissing anyone, I just announced to you that I will have a discussion with the interim president of Romania, Ilie Bolojan.”

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, the leader of the PSD, told Gândul on Tuesday that Romania has been changing its approach to relations with the US “for about two or three weeks” and said of Emil Hurezeanu, Minister of Foreign Affairs at the proposal of the PNL, that he is an “old-fashioned” diplomat, but “he is not in the dynamics of diplomacy that is now being imposed with the United States of America”.
The PSD leader admitted that he is not “a big fan” of the current Minister of Foreign Affairs.
“I’m not a big fan of Hurezeanu, but he knows it too. I think he’s not a big fan of Ciolacu either (…). The Foreign Minister’s proposal was made by the National Liberal Party (…). Mr. Hurezeanu is a diplomat, so to speak, but without offending him, of the old fashion. He’s a type of diplomat with a staff, in an area of diplomacy that is very good to adapt to in Europe. He’s not in the dynamics of diplomacy that is now being imposed with the United States of America. This is the truth. This does not mean that Mr. Hurezeanu is not an exceptional diplomat”, added Marcel Ciolacu.
He mentioned that “it is possible that there will be a new approach at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (…), in the area of more direct contact with the United States of America”.
UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor also expressed his dissatisfaction on the incumbent FM: “I don’t hear anything from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For me it’s absolutely amazing. Well, for weeks and weeks, it’s like we don’t have a Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“I think that Mr. Hurezeanu has not really kept up with this new dynamic of international relations lately, and so I see that we are not really finding relations with the Trump administration, with the United States. I don’t know if only Mr. Hurezeanu has a responsibility in this regard, but he is still the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania,” said UDMR MP Csoma Botond, in his turn.
The US, which after the Trump administration came to power criticized the Romanian authorities for the decision to cancel the 2024 presidential elections, announced on Tuesday that it is indefinitely suspending Romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver program.
