Representatives of the Romanian Presidential Administration on Thursday met the members of the diplomatic corps of EU and NATO states to present them the new National Defence Strategy adopted by the joint defence parliamentary committees on Wednesday.

“Presenting this document for the first time to the diplomatic corps accredited in Bucharest was followed by a dialogue on the Energetic Union and EU strategic communication topics,” reads the Presidency’s release.

President Iohannis sent the Defence Strategy to Parliament on June 12, also asking to address the plenum sitting on this topic on June 22.

The National Defence Strategy mentions that the threats, risks and vulnerabilities against defence and security are traditionally assessed through military concept, but the current security environment needs a larger approach that must also comprise economic, social, political, tehnological and environmental elements.

„Corruption is weakening the state, causing economic prejudices and affecting the country’s development potential, as well as the trust in the judiciary and state institutions. Externally, corruption has an adverse impact on the country’s credibility and image,” reads the document.

The National Defence Strategy also counts among the threats against Romania „the destabilising actions in the Eastern neighborhood, which generate major challenges ahead the euro atlantic space’s security by prompting regional instability, organized crime, migration and affecting the economic development potential.”
