President Klaus Iohannis will attend the EU-Africa Summit and the European Council extraordinary meeting on Wednesday and Thursday. Migration is high on the agenda of both summits, Iohannis saying that Romania did not change its position regarding this topic.

The first summit rejoins EU leaders and several countries in Africa. p“The purpose of this meeting is to find the best ways to stop migration,” Iohannis said. “It’s obvious that we need here a support mechanism for the African countries so that we could control and limit this migration,” the Romanian president also said.

According to AFP, the European leaders are to grant Africa aids worth EUR 3.6 billion to help them cope with the migration crisis.

On Thursday, Iohannis will attend the extraordinary European Council that will also tackle migration. “After the meetings in the last months, one can see a lot of coordination is still needed,” Iohannis said, explaining the migration file will be debated in the view of the need of strengthening EU’s external borders. “We consider that the EU’s external borders should be strengthened, and we are not talking about our borders, which are working very well, but other borders, where the migration flows enter,” he mentioned.

President Iohannis said that Romania’s position to both meetings will be unchanged.

“Romania is solidary with the other EU member states and wants to find the best solutions together with EU to be able to manage this important refugees flow. Romania is providing a severe border control,” he pointed out.

He stated that EU will have to involve in the “peacemaking process” related to the refugees’ countries of origin, while for the transit countries, the cooperation between member states should be enhanced to help these countries to manage the migrant waves.
