President Klaus Iohannis is asking for new recruits in the Army, while a draft law on voluntary military training is under discussion, which is to reach Parliament for emergency debates. The head of state declared on Wednesday that Romania must intensify efforts to strengthen the reserve of military personnel, to revitalize the national defense industry and to modernize the transport infrastructure.

“The defense of our citizens is one of the fundamental obligations of the Romanian state. However, people’s safety cannot be guaranteed without an army equipped with modern technology. Starting with the year 2023, Romania has increased from 2% to 2.5% the allocation of GDP for Defense, that is, for endowment of the Romanian Army, for the motivation, training and improvement of our military and to increase the level of interoperability with the allied forces. In parallel, we must intensify efforts to strengthen the reserve of military personnel, to revitalize the national defense industry and to modernize the transport infrastructure”, said President Klaus Iohannis, during the event “ROMANIA – NATO, 20 years”, held at the Palace of the National Military Circle.

The statements take place in the context in which a normative act under debate in Parliament regarding military training is addressed to women and men between the ages of 18 and 35, who could opt for military training within the MApN for 4 months, following after completing the internship to enter the military reserve. The mandatory army in Romania is not currently in the plan, Klaus Iohannis also said.
