Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has conveyed a condolences message to the Turkish authorities following the attacks on Tuesday on Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul, underscoring that Romania remains a partner involved in the international fight against terrorism.

“The terrorist attacks in Istanbul, Tuesday night, are an atrocity. Tens of people have lost their lives and more than 140 have been wounded following a cruel act targeted against innocent people. I want to convey my sincerest condolences to the grieved families and we stand together with those fighting for their lives. Such attacks should be prevented and our country is and will remain an involved partner in the international fight against terrorism,” President Iohannis said, according to a release on Wednesday.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) has firmly condemned the terrorist attack that took place on June 28, 2016 at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, which made numerous victims.

MAE reiterates Romania’s firm commitment to combat all forms of terrorism and reaffirms the need for common and intensified international efforts to combat such unjustifiable actions, which put in peril innocent lives.

MAE, through the Romanian Embassy in Ankara and the Romanian General Consulate in Istanbul, has urgently contacted the local authorities in order to check if Romanians citizens are among the victims. The two missions have launched the standard consular procedures for such situations and are in contact with the Turkish authorities, being ready to grant consular assistance in the limit of their competences. Supplementary, a consular team within Romania’s General Consulate in Istanbul went on the site to offer consular assistance.
