President Klaus Iohannis announced today, in a statement, that he does not intend to resign from his position and that he will not run in the parliamentary elections in December regardless of the BEC’s decision.
“As I have stated on several occasions, I will finish my mandate as President of Romania on time and I will not resign from my position. I will not run in the parliamentary elections in December, regardless of the decision that the Central Electoral Bureau will adopt today. I did not support and do not support the amendment of the electoral legislation in favor of a single person”, Klaus Iohannis said in a press release sent by the Presidential Administration.
On Monday, the PNL asked the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) to say whether President Iohannis can run for parliamentary elections without the need to change the law, as claimed by the Legislative Council led by Florin Iordache (former Minister of Justice in the Dragnea – PSD governments) in the opinion delivered last week, according to a Liberal announcement.
Last Friday, the Legislative Council approved the PNL proposal with comments, showing that there is no need for this amendment so that President Iohannis can run for parliamentary elections while he is still in the position of head of state. The Legislative Council showed that “the president of Romania has the right to run for the position of senator or deputy on the list of a political party, political alliance or electoral alliance, even in the absence of the expected norm”.
As a result of this request to the BEC, the PNL will not put the debate of the amendment on the agenda of the permanent office of the Senate until it receives a response from the BEC, according to the PNL announcement.
A draft law submitted by the PNL, which contains a single amendment to the electoral legislation, gives President Klaus Iohannis, still in office, the opportunity to run as an independent on the PNL list in the December 1 parliamentary elections.
The liberals need a majority to pass the draft law, as an emergency, through Parliament, so that its provisions apply to this year’s parliamentary elections and this majority seems not to be provided at the time being, as PSD opposed to it.
