President Klaus Iohannis said, during a press statement at Cotroceni Palace on Wednesday that the Social-Democratic Party is afraid of the referendum on May 26 and is trying to boycott it.

Their activists walk all over the country to explain that the referendum is not important. This attempt is pathetic. Moreover, Dragnea (Liviu Dragnea – PSD chairman, our note) has ordered the National Audiovisual Council (CNA) to ignore the referendum. For the first time in history, CNA refused to a lot broadcasting intervals for the referendum. They did not want even to discuss the issue. They’ve told me to deal with the political parties,” President Iohannis said.

The head of state warned the citizens to consider the recent events during the election campaign where PSD has had rallies.

Romanians should not be afraid. If they want to find out why they should go to the voting stations, they should look at what happened during the campaign, at Topoloveni, with people arrested by Police. Targoviste was a closed city just because PSD want to carry out its rally,” Iohannis said.

He made an appeal to the citizens to get out and vote.

The right to vote was won by Romanians in December 1989. Romanians, don’t waste the right to vote, go out and vote! Don’t be afraid, the right to vote is yours. On May 26 you have the power, go to the polls, don’t let PSD decide for you!” the President said.

Asked by reporters about the outcome of elections for European Parliament, the head of state said “I am convinced the results on Sunday will influence the domestic political scene.”

President Iohannis also said he would not nominate another social-democrat for Prime Minister.
