President Klaus Iohannis has summoned a sitting of the Supreme Defence Council (CSAT) for next week. The meeting is scheduled on September 14, the Presidency’s spokesperson Madalina Dobrovolschi announced on Thursday.
“The Supreme Defence Council (CSAT) meeting will take place at Cotroceni Palace on September 14, at 11:00,” Dobrovolschi said.
The agenda includes such topics as the participation of the Romanian Army’s navy forces to a NATO military exercise and the national strategy on preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
“There are two topics on this meeting’s agenda, namely the Romanian Army’s participation in NATO-led mission with a naval capability, in the second semester of this year and the national strategy on preventing the proliferation of the weapons of mass destruction,” the President’s spokeswoman stated.
The CSAT meeting comes amid the scandal of the recent DefMin resignation over the military salary blunder.
The Presidency’s spokesperson said that President Iohannis has been permanently informed about the MoD situation.
“He also had a dialogue with the premier and asked for the situation to be solved, which eventually happened and things are how you know it- the premier has received the minister’s resignation, and the president has agreed the premier’s position,” Dobrovolschi pointed out.
According to her, the upcoming visit to be paid by the Defence Minister to the US is an administrative matter, with organizers revealing the details at the right moment.
PSD chairman Liviu Dragnea explained on Thursday that the interim Defence minister will attend the CSAT meeting next week and the Defence minister at that time will go to the US for the heralded visit.
President to attend the UN General Assembly session
At the same time, the presidential spokesperson announced that Klaus Iohannis will attend a session of the UN General Assembly in New York, during September 18-23.
“On September 18-23, the President of Romania will attend the session of the UN General Assembly in New York. It is the 72nd regular session of the UN General Assembly. There are important actions and meetings high on the President’s agenda on this occasion. Details will be made public at the right time,” said Dobrovolschi.
Asked if Iohannis will meet US President Donald Trump or other US officials, Dobrovolschi said: “There will certainly be meetings (…) but the entire schedule and all the details will be communicated at the right time, precisely because there are many things to be communicated.”
