President Iohannis to announce decision on Kovesi recall early next week
The fate of the chief prosecutor of the National Anti-corruption Directorate, Laura Codruta Kovesi, will be decided soon, with President Klaus Iohannis saying on Friday he will announce his answer to the Justice Minister’s request to recall Kovesi early next week.
The Romanian President said few weeks ago that he would announce his decision on Kovesi after Easter.
However, at the end of February, President Iohannis told the speech delivered at the DNA balance sheet meeting that the directorate is efficient and that we are witnessing an attempt of the politics to subordinate the judiciary, while accusing that several people facing legal problems have joined their forces to discredit the magistrates that had investigated them.
February was also the month when Justice Minister Tudorel Toader initiated procedures to dismiss the DNA head, presenting a 36-page report containing 20 ‘charges’ against Kovesi.
The Superior Council of Magistracy’s prosecutors’ section have issued a negative opinion on the Justice Minister’s proposal to dismiss the National Anticorruption Chief Prosecutor.
The decision to dismiss DNA head ultimately belongs to the Romanian President.
