Romanian President Klaus Iohannis rejected speculations about a possible resignation, stating that “we operate according to the Constitution” and that he will remain in office until the new president hands over his mandate. At the same time, he stressed that “Romania must elect a president”, and future candidates must explain how they will lead the country in the coming years.
Asked about a possible resignation, Klaus Iohannis stressed that he would not do so. “I think it is a topic being circulated for populist and electoral reasons because, that is not the case, we operate according to the Constitution. When I was elected, over 6 million Romanians voted for me to do things by the book, and the book is the Constitution,” Iohannis said.
The Romanian president also reiterated that his term will soon end and, regardless of his achievements, Romania must focus on electing a new president.
“Anyway, I don’t think we need to talk about this. I’ll be leaving in a few months and I take responsibility for what I’ve done, both the good and the bad, but Romania needs to elect a president. This is the topic we need to discuss. I don’t see any use in prolonged discussions about whether I should have stayed or not,” he added.
In the current context, Iohannis stressed that the topical topic should be the future of the elected president and their proposals for leading the country. “Candidates or those interested in Romania need to come forward and say how they want to take Romania forward and what Romanians should expect from them,” the president said.
At the same time, Iohannis also addressed other important topics, such as the approval of a national budget. “There are other very topical topics: the budget. We need to have a budget as soon as possible in order to have predictable behavior. The world wants to know how the economy will function and what to expect going forward,” Klaus Iohannis added, underlining the need for a clear and sustainable economic plan for the country’s future.
Klaus Iohannis is attending the informal meeting of European Union leaders on defense issues in Brussels on Monday, February 3, his first appearance this year.

No, he has it all wrong! Resignation had to happen in January and new election latest February. This is the ethical stance. Now we have to wait 7 months with a headless state because he must not take any decisions. Ainte, enough is enough.
