Social-Democrats will start in September the selection of candidates for local elections, said the deputy Secretary-General of PSD, Codrin Stefanescu and the politicians facing justice issues will be able to apply for new mandates, if the polls are positive, ziare.com informs.
“The selection of candidates begins immediately after the selections in each county. This means that in late September we are to start the analysis on each candidate. In late September we will start the surveys for several candidates in certain areas where we have 2-3 options. Surveys will be conducted. Probably by mid November we will have a clearer situation, how we position ourselves,” said Codrin Stefanescu.
Furthermore, Stefanescu said that deciding upon the candidates will depend also on the negotiations with UNPR on joint candidacy lists. He added the talks will start in November or right after the PSD congress.
“It all depends how the candidates are perceived by the public opinion. There are people who have had 2-3 mandates and still have 70-75% popularity. On the other hand we have local officials having disastrous popularity, no analysis is needed in their cases. They are closed subjects,” Codrin Stefanescu said.
The deputy Secretary-General of PSD said the politicians facing justice issues, however without a final ruling, will be allowed to run again.
“We consider the presumption of innocence. (…) Some see from the centre they are barons, we see a man who is in the territory is voted by 60-70% of the people. If Gheorghe Nichita is voted in Iasi by 75%, it doesn’t matter that in Bucharest some see him as baron. I cannot ignore the hundreds of thousands of votes in a county like this,” said Codrin Stefanescu.
