An agreement to form a new ruling coalition in Republic of Moldova – the Alliance for European Integration 3 – was signed on Tuesday night to Wednesday by the leaders of the three pro-European parties – the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), the Democratic Party (PDM) and the Liberal Party (PL) – after several rounds of negotiations in Chisinau.

The agreement is to be signed on Wednesday by all MPs of the three parties.

Finally, the leaders of the three pro-European parties said they had agreed on a referendum to amend the Constitution so that the president is elected by simple majority of votes. The Moldovan citizens could be called to a constitutional referendum to change the method of electing the president.

PLDM, PDM and PL, holding 55 seats out of 101 in parliament, agreed in principle on the creation of a parliamentary majority, following the resignation submitted on June 16 by PM Chiril Gaburici’s government, who was backed by a minority alliance made up by Liberal Democrats and Democrats.

Romania’s Prime Minister Victor Ponta hailed the agreement establishing a new governing alliance in the Republic of Moldova – The Alliance for European Integration 3 – and assured Moldova’s pro-European leaders of the Romanian Government’s full support.

“Congratulations to the pro-European leaders for the decision adopted in Chisinau! The Romanian Government and I, personally, will grant all the possible support to the Republic of Moldova!” Ponta said in a Facebook post in Romanian.
