The Romanian ambassador to the US, George Maior told an interview for Politico that Romania is the most pro-American country in Europe, also announcing the Romanian Defence Minister Mihai Fifor will pay a visit to the USA in September and meet the US Defence Secretary, Jim Mattis.
Ambassador Maior added that minister Fifor plans to promote Romania’s offer to host a permanent American military contingent at the air base in Mihai Kogalniceanu, Constanta county.
“We always want to see a larger American presence,” the Romanian ambassador pointed out.
According to a press release issued by the Romanian Embassy in Washington, ambassador Maior also tackled such topics in the interview as our country’s efforts to enhance the Euro-Atlantic security, especially on NATO’s eastern flank, including by increasing the defence budget.
Maior opined that the American military forces should move from the central Europe to the eastern flank. “We think that the center of gravity should move, in terms of forces, from the central Europe to the NATO’s eastern border, which is more exposed,” he argued.
The Romanian ambassador in Washington also mentioned the need to fight back against new, hybrid-type threats, which are “very subtle and very complicated,” stressing that Romania has warned its allies about Russia’s growing preference for hybrid tactics.
