Russia has decided to attack the Republic of Moldova to open a new front against Ukraine, The Times reports, quoting sources within the Ukrainian intelligence services.

One of the sources of the British publication says that there are several factors that would indicate an attack in the near future on the Republic of Moldova, which has an army of only 3,250 soldiers. If they manage to take control of the Republic of Moldova, Russian troops could attack the port city of Odessa from the west.

We believe that the decision to attack the Republic of Moldova has already been taken by the Kremlin.    The fate of the Republic of Moldova is crucial. If the Russians start gaining control, from a military point of view we are an easier target (to be conquered – n.r.) and the threat to Ukraine will be existential,” a Ukrainian military source told the British daily, as EFE also reported.

Tensions have risen in Transnistria, a separatist region in Moldova, following a series of blasts blamed on “terrorists”.
