Third round of consultations at Cotroceni Palace

Official sources told local media that President Klaus Iohannis would convene the parliamentary parties for consultations on electoral laws and judiciary’s requests for MPs immunity lifting next week.

This is the third round of talks of president Iohannis since he swore in as president in December 2014.

The first round was on January 12 and targeted a political agreement on a minimum threshold of 2 pc of GDP for the Defence Ministry starting 2017.

The second round took place on January 28 and tackled the legislative priorities of this parliamentary session: the Diaspora vote, the electoral campaigns and parties financing and immunity lifting. After this second round of consultations, President Iohannis stated that a time table was agreed that a new package of laws on parliamentary and local elections should be drafted by the end of this session, as well as regarding the Diaspora vote, the parties financing and the parties law.

The third round of talks was triggered by the President’s discontent related to the way the Parliament keeps responding to Judiciary’s requests. Klaus Iohannis announced that after the (Easter) holiday he would table a new round of consultations to the parliamentary parties in order to see “where does the legislation amendment stand” in this respect.
