Former President Traian Basescu believes that the statements made by the former head of the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) Gelu Diaconu concerning an ambassador of an EU Member State, who allegedly tried to make pressures for a company, are true and said Thursday evening that such situations happened in the past at the ‘ministries’, News.ro reports.
“Yes, I believe him. Such things are done. Those whom you see giving us lessons – I’m not referring to the current US ambassador, but many of those you’ve seen during the years giving us lessons – they went to ministries to support a company: “Why didn’t it won this auction, it has to win,” said Thursday evening former President Traian Basescu for a TV station.
He said he had no such information through official channels, but he found out from the ministers, adding that he had such ‘interventions’ during the period when he was minister.
“As president, they did not dare to come to me, as minister, yes,” Basescu said.
Regarding the information that the ambassador referred to by the former ANAF head is Dutch, Basescu said that the Netherlands “plays a very ugly game with Romania”.
“The Netherlands looks at the port of Constanta as to an apple it wants in its basket. It would like to have the management of Constanta Port to handle the cargo traffic,” said Traian Basescu.
The former ANAF head Gelu Diaconu wrote on Thursday on his personal website that an ambassador came to his office together with a businessman, and pressured him to release the VAT refund in a case of tax evasion, his allegations being confirmed by former Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who wrote on Facebook that the one is the Dutch ambassador, who ended his mission in Romania.
