PSD Deputy Chairman Doina Pană, former Minister of Waters and Forests, said on Wednesday for Antena 3 TV private broadcaster that she discovered that she was poisoned with Mercury, then she had to give up the ministry for health reasons. Pana mentioned that she has also filed a complaint to the Police in this regard and she hopes the responsible ones will be found, hotnews.ro informs.

The disclosure about her health problems comes days after the ones made by Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea regarding a 4-centimeter wire found by surgeons in her colon.

“I was Minister of Waters and Forests in the Tudose cabinet, in 2017. At the end of November I started feeling sick, I went to the doctor, I found out I had heart related problems. I went on treatment but still felt sicker. As I conducted all specific tests, I was finally sent to have a toxicological test. On January 15, 2018, I learned that I was intoxicated with Mercury in high concentration,” Doina Pana said.

She mentioned that, as she had filed the resignation, she could not leave the office until January 29 because President Klaus Iohannis did not sign the decree. She submitted a complaint to the Police at the beginning of February. I did not file the complaint while minister, not to damage Romania’s image. Imagine, a minister in the Romanian Government had been poisoned,” Pana said.

Asked if she suspects someone, Pana pointed to the timber mafia: “I was Minister of Water and Forests and I had made some decisions since 2014, so that the illegal logging was cut down from 8.8 cubic meters to 0.4 million cubic meters. Do you realize what financial damages I have caused to the ones dealing with illegal logging? I have no proof, but it is obvious this was the sector.”

On January 3, 2018 Doina Pana filed the resignation as Minister of Waters and Forests to the then PM Mihai Tudose, invoking health reasons. She had been in office since June 2017.

DIICOT opens file for attempted murder

The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) is conducting investigations following the statements made by Doina Pana. The investigations target the offenses of setting up an organized crime group and attempted murder. Doina Pana has already been heard.

The former minister has handed over several medical documents attesting she has had, in her body, a quantity of Mercury double than the normal levels.
