The trade unions, employers and government representatives have reached an agreement on Tuesday regarding the minimum wage, which is to increase to RON 1,250 as of May 1, 2016. The decision is to be made official on Wednesday during the government sitting.

The government has submitted a draft resolution on raising the minimum wage to RON 1,250 as of May 1, and agreed on the automatic indexing that will take into account the minimum basket and inflation, a proposal that the trade unions agreed upon, President of Cartel Alfa trade union Bogdan Hossu said.

Hossu said that the document submitted by the Government, unlike in previous years, makes no discrimination for the public sector, meaning that the guaranteed minimum wage is the paid minimum wage and not the employment salary.

The Economic and Social Council (CES) was convened later on Tuesday to approve the draft government decision.

The National Tripartite Council rejoining the Government representatives and the leaders of the trade unions and of the employers convened on Monday evening to discuss the minimum wage and the opportunity of raising it as of 2016.

According to CNS ‘Cartel Alfa’ leader, Bogdan Hossu, the Government proposed at the beginning the rise to be enforced as of May 1, 2016, arguing an impact assessment is needed.

On the other hand, the trade unions opposed the idea, asking for this increase to come into force as of January 1.

Bogdan Hossu warned Monday evening that if the minimum wage does not increase as of January 1, street movements would follow as of January 15. The trade union leader argues the Gov’t has no excuse to maintain discrimination between the budgetary and the private sector.

The National Tripartite Council convened on Monday at 5 p.m. at the Labour Ministry’s HQs to discuss over the minimum wage increase, given the fact that a decision must be taken by Thursday, December 31.

The last Government sitting of this year, when a decision on the minimum wage is expected, is scheduled on Wednesday, December 30.
