President Klaus Ionannis has turned down on Tuesday the proposal for prime minister filed by the PSD-ALDE, Sevil Shhaideh. Iohannis offered no explanation on his decision. He stated he does not accept the nomination.

“I had consultations with the political parties PSD and ALDE, which wanted to come together to consultations, they’ve proposed Mrs. Sevil Shhaideh for the office of prime minister. I have carefully weighted the pro and con arguments and I have decided to turn down the proposal. Consequently, I request the PSD-ALDE coalition to submit another proposal,” President Iohannis said.

President Klaus Iohannis informed last Thursday, at the end of the second round of consultations with the parliamentary parties, that he would designate the future Prime Minister after Christmas. He returned to Bucharest on Tuesday, from Sibiu, where he celebrated Christmas.

PSD leader Liviu Dragnea warned last week that if any PSD member accepted another proposal made by President Iohannis would be “immediately expelled from the party”. He added that if the proposal is turned down “we will face each other in another place”, hinting most probably at the Constitutional Court.

The social-democrats have announced a press conference at 16.00h on Tuesday.

Iohannis had phone conversation with Sevil Shhaideh, her husband’s brothers allegedly are connected to Damascus, sources say

Political sources say President Iohannis has had a phone conversation with Servil Shhaideh on Tuesday, during which the head of state informed her that he would turn down the PSD proposal.  The same political sources reveal that PSD leader Liviu Dragnea was later informed by Mrs. Shhaideh about the presidential decision.

According to hotnew.ro, besides the fact that Sevil Shhaideh’s husband had worked for the Syrian government for years, reportedly his brothers are connected to the regime in Damascus, sources close to Cotroceni Palace say. According to these sources, the notifications coming from intelligence services were “absolutely negative” and included the activities conducted by Akram Shhaideh’s brothers. The same sources say President Klaus Iohannis has informed PSD leader Liviu Dragnea and Sevil Shhaideh about the reasons for turning down the PSD proposal, before the public announcement.

Ion Iliescu: Dialogue is needed to solve the problems

Former President Ion Iliescu, also former PSD leader, pleads for dialogue. “A process which should have been approached more urgently in order to have a new team is prolonged. Usually people talk. (…) We have a new parliament, a new structure, the president has little seniority in office, but dialogue is needed to solve the problems. I hope in the end the way of dialogue prevails,” Iliescu said.

PSD Vice-president Andronescu – I wish the President had brought arguments

PSD Vice-president Ecaterina Andronescu has told Antena 3 TV about the PSD steps after the President’s decision.

“First of all, we’ll try to get together and to analyse this situation. I wish the president has brought arguments for the refusal. In such situations he might say ‘no’ to any proposal, which undoubtedly is not quite right. Because it is not only about PSD and ALDE, this is about the people’s vote,” Andronescu said

Asked whether the PSD will submit a new proposal, Ecaterina Andronescu said: “I wouldn’t venture to talk about things I do not know. In the analysis we are going to conduct, all the arguments for all variants will be weighted.”

Traian Basescu: Rejection of Sevil Shhaideh must not launch clash of vanities

The rejection by President Klaus Iohannis of the nomination as Prime Minister of Sevil Shhaideh must not launch a clash of vanities, the leader of the People’s Movement Party (PMP), Traian Basescu, stated. “The rejection by President Klaus Iohannis of the nomination as Prime Minister of Sevil Shhaideh must not launch a clash of vanities. Dragnea and President Iohannis have the obligation to find immediately a solution. I make the specification that in the new nomination, as well within the new Government, there should not be people controlled by the intelligence services. It is not the right moment for an unnecessary political war between Dragnea and Iohannis. Any option that envisages the President’s suspension should be renounced”, Basescu posted on Facebook, on Tuesday.

Furthermore, he claims he did not have any discussion with any representative of the intelligence services in the last months.

PNL: We hail President’s decision

The interim chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Raluca Turcan, hails the decision of President Klaus Iohannis to reject the proposal of the Social Democrat Party (PSD) and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) of Sevil Shhaideh for the position of Prime Minister, emphasizing that the future Government should be immune from any form of vulnerabilities. “We hail the decision, taken in the national interest, of the President of Romania. It’s his constitutional right to reject the proposal and certainly there are many arguments. We consider that the future Government of Romania should be immune from any form of vulnerabilities, especially in an extremely complicated international context,” Turcan wrote on Facebook. She also underlines that Romania must not issue confuse or contradictory signals.

No constitutional conflict, jurists say

The decision to turn down the PSD proposal by President Iohannis is not leading to constitutional conflict, it is in fact the constitutional right of the head of state to appoint the prime minister, several jurists have said, according to hotnews.ro.

In his turn, former chairman of the Constitutional Court Augustin Zegrean said on Tuesday that the president cannot be forced to appoint as prime minister a person whom he does not want and this cannot be ground for suspension.

“Let them (PSD) come up with another proposal. That can be done,” said Zegrean.

“That would be a reason for suspending the president? He does his job. The Constitution allows him to designate or not the person proposed,” he added.
