Social Democrats are planning to stage a street rally in support of Dancila Cabinet and of the party leadership, with the date of June 9 being set in principle. Sources within Social Democrat Party told local media the party members have been informed to prepare to take to the streets.
The ruling coalition wants to send a firm message of endorsement for the party, chairman Liviu Dragnea and the Government following latest exits of some party members and the criticism launched by President Klaus Iohannis.
ALDE chairman Calin Popescu Tariceanu has voiced intention to support such a manifestation in support for their coalition partners.
A party sitting is to take place at the end of this week or early next week to formalise the proposal, as the chairman Liviu Dragnea is not in Romania these days. He is paying an official visit to Bern, Switzerland during may 29-31.
Liberal chair Orban: Such rallies are only staged in the totalitarian regimes
Liberal National Party chairman Ludovic Orban has replied that the support rally will not help PM Viorica Dancila, arguing there are no reasons for Romanians to attend such a manifestation, as the economic situation had worsened.
”I have not seen such meetings in support for the ruling party, except for the totalitarian regimes. I do not recall such rallies in support for the ruling party and the Government to be staged in democracy. I do not see who might come. Public servants, to whom a pay rise by 25 percent has been promised and who obtained only a 4 pc pay rise? Owners of farmlands, who have been lied they would have zero tax and who are still paying taxes? Company shareholders who were promised a zero tax on dividends, which has not decreased, but moreover, a contribution for health insurances of 10 percent has been added? Will pensioners come, for they had no rise of the pension point by 8 percent as they were entitled to as of January 1, 2018? The employees of private companies who had their incomes affected by the transfer of the social securities? The population, whose purchasing power has fallen? Those who have bank credits and who see now their mortgages up due to ROBOR rise?” Orban told Digi24.
