Update – US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, stopover in Romania

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was in Romania on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, a stopover in Bucharest on the return from his trip to Asia.

Tillerson did not have an official programme in Romania. He was welcomed by Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu, according to diplomatic sources.

The US Embassy announced on Facebook the stopover and sent a welcoming message to the US Secretary of State.

The photos posted show the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson talking to Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu and the US Ambassador in Romania, Hans Klemm at the Otopeni Airport.

The official remained overnight in Bucharest after being in Myanmar on Wednesday for a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi and the army commander General Min Aung Hlaing in the context of the humanitarian crisis of the rohingya minority.

Sources quoted by Realitatea TV claim that the surprise visit paid by the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was more than a technical stopover. The sources say the high US official was coming from Baku and there was no need to refuel the aircraft. The same sources confirm that the visit seems to be related to the fact that the ruling coalition senators have boycotted the Defence Committee sitting on Tuesday, which should have discussed the acquisition of the Patriot missile defence system.
