The Bucharest Court of Appeal rejected as null and void on Thursday the appeal filed by the USR against the decision by which the Central Electoral Bureau established that the party cannot campaign for Nicușor Dan. Thus, the party will not be able to use money to support the independent candidate in the presidential race.
The USR announced that it will appeal to the High Court of Cassation and Justice against the decision taken by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, a decision it described as “dangerous”.
The USR chairwoman, Elena Lasconi, who was present in the courtroom on Wednesday, welcomed the decision pronounced by the Bucharest Court of Appeal on Thursday.
“I have the courage to do justice and it was seen in this case. The truth was on my side. It was not an easy fight, but it was a necessary one. For me, for the people who believe in me and for the democratic values that I defend. We cannot make fun of democracy, especially not in the USR, a party that was born from the streets, from so much hope and fight for the rule of law”, Elena Lasconi declared after the verdict was pronounced.
She thanked her lawyers and team, but “especially all those who stood by me with a message, with a kind word, with trust”. “This decision is not only a moral reparation, but also a clear signal that justice can be done in Romania when you have courage and do not deviate from principles”, concluded Elena Lasconi.
Elena Lasconi, whose USR announced last week that it was withdrawing its support in order to support Nicușor Dan in the presidential race, asked the court to find that only the USR Congress has the authority to change or revoke a party president and that USR’s political and legal decisions can only be assumed by the elected president.
The court ruled in her favor, says the candidate’s communications team. At the same time, Lasconi asked the court to find the nullity of the steps taken by the USR National Bureau on behalf of the party, including the appeal filed against the BEC decision.
The Central Electoral Bureau decided, in the meeting of April 12, 2025, following a complaint filed by AUR, that USR cannot campaign for a candidate other than Elena Lasconi, whose candidacy it has already officially proposed.
USR, on the other hand, announced on Thursday that it will appeal to the High Court of Cassation and Justice against the decision taken by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which established that the party cannot campaign for Nicușor Dan in the presidential race. The party described the Bucharest Court of Appeal’s decision as “dangerous” and claims that, in this way, the court “censors the decisions of a party’s political forums and decides on a political strategy.”
