Zelensky Calls for Truce After Massive Russian Attack

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted after an attack by nearly 200 drones and dozens of missiles by Moscow, Reuters reports. It is not the first time that the Ukrainian president has called for a partial ceasefire, as a first step towards a comprehensive peace deal that would include security guarantees for Kiev.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a ceasefire in the air and at sea, as well as for additional pressure on Russia, after a massive attack that hit Ukrainian energy infrastructure overnight.

“The first steps to establishing real peace should be to force the sole source of this war, Russia, to cease such attacks,” Zelensky said in a message posted on the Telegram app.

The Ukrainian Air Force said on Friday that last night’s Russian attack was a combined one, with nearly 200 drones and dozens of missiles launched from land and sea against key Ukrainian infrastructure, with the main target being gas production facilities.

According to the cited source, 194 attack drones and imitators and 67 X-101, Kalibr, Iskander, X-59/69 and S-300 missiles were launched.

This is not the first time Zelensky has called for such a ceasefire, which has also been circulated by sources in the French government.

Zelensky himself on Thursday asked EU leaders to support the idea of a ceasefire between Russian and Ukrainian forces in the air and at sea, saying it would be a chance to test Moscow’s will to end the invasion. “Everyone must make sure that Russia, as the sole source of this war, accepts the need to end it,” Zelensky said.

“This can be proven by two points that are easy to establish and monitor, namely, no attacks on energy and other civilian infrastructure – a ceasefire for long-range missiles, bombs and drones, and the second is a ceasefire on the water, that is, no military operations in the Black Sea,” Zelensky added.

He stressed that any such ceasefire could only be seen as a first step towards a comprehensive agreement on ending the war and providing security guarantees to Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian leader, the release of all prisoners of war could also be a means of establishing “basic trust.” Zelensky also stressed once again the need to adhere to the principle of “no talks on Ukraine without Ukraine,” after US President Donald Trump engaged in bilateral talks with Russia, marginalizing Kiev and European leaders.

The idea of an initial partial ceasefire was first floated as part of a plan being discussed by France and Britain, according to the Financial Times. Details of the European peace plan emerged after Macron told Le Figaro that he and Starmer had proposed an initial ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine “in the air, at sea and for energy infrastructure” that would last for a month.
