President Klaus Iohannis retorted to the recent move taken by the Romanian government (through the foreign ministry) to block the EU statement on relocating embassies in Israel to Jerusalem, stating on Saturday evening that he has not been consulted over this action and that PSD is conducting the foreign policy by ear and risks taking Romania out of EU.
”This is yet another example that PSD ruling is bad. They, these Social Democrats, have used the lack of clarity in the legislation in force and have blocked a document at EU level without consulting the president. This is already the second time when they are trying to conduct the foreign policy by ear, as they have also done with the salary law, by ear. And things turn out badly”, Iohannis said.
”By blocking a statement, here it is, Romania is suddenly taken again at the edge of the EU next to some countries that are essentially rather euro-skeptical. I want to remind the PSD that Romanians are pro-Europeans and these more and more anti-European measures, on the line of a counter-performing ruling, really risk taking us out of Europe. This is not possible, it is inadmissible that PSD, through a ruling by ear, takes more and more decisions dictated from the party, I am convinced, meant to take us at the edge of the Unions,” the head of state added.
Romanian President announced he would summon FM Teodor Melescanu to explain the motivation for this action, adding that no step has been taken in any direction regarding a potential relocation of the Romanian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
”The embassy cannot be moved without my consent. Period. No matter what it is being said,” Iohannis concluded.
