President Klaus Iohannis has announced on Tuesday that the appointment of the new head of the Romanian Gendarmerie, Sebastian Cucos, will be made when the military prosecutors will complete the investigation of the intervention of the law enforcement forces during the protest on August 10.

“Regarding the information in the public space regarding the approval by the Supreme Defence Council of the country of the appointment to the position of general inspector of the Romanian Gendarmerie, the Presidential Administration states the following: On August 1, the Ministry of Internal Affairs sent to the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis, the proposal for endorsement by the Supreme Defence Council of the Country of the appointment of Colonel Cucos Gheorghe-Sebastian as General Inspector of the Romanian Gendarmerie. The documentation regarding the proposal to approve the appointment of the officer in that position is under work at the CSAT Secretariat, according to its own organization and functioning law, adopts resolutions by consensus in its six-monthly meetings or in the interval between meetings, with the individual agreement of the members of the Council,” the Presidency informs in a press release.

Therefore, the Presidency states that the appointment of the new head of the Romanian Gendarmerie, Sebastian Cucos, will be made after the completing of the investigation into the events and intervention of the gendarmes in the August 10 protest in Victoriei Square.

“Considering the events on August 10, during the protest in Victoriei Square, when the Romanian Gendarmerie was involved, it is imperative that a decision by the Supreme Defence Council of the Country on the appointment of Colonel Cucos Gheorghe-Sebastian to the position the General Inspector is made after the ruling of the competent judicial bodies on the legality of the Gendarmerie’s actions. In this context, the topic could be analysed and debated by CSAT during the next sitting, considering the conclusions drawn by the investigations of the competent judiciary bodies.
