The Social-Democratic Party (PSD) has summoned on Friday, at 16.00h, a sitting of the Executive Committee to discuss the situation after the sentence issued in Liviu Dragnea’s DGASPC Teleorman file.
According to hotnews.ro, there are two camps in the party. Dragnea’s contestants met Thursday evening to discuss a plan. Among them are Mihai Tudose, Gabriel Vlase, Marcel Ciolacu, Nicolae Badalau. Sources say they want to gather support in order to replace Dragnea from the party’s helm. The same sources claim about 20 MPs and several county organisations are on this side. The positioning of PSD Bucharest, led by Gabriela Firea, is expected.
On the other hand, the supporters of PSD leader believe he is a political victim, and say that those requesting his resignation are in fact violating the Constitution. The organisations of Brașov, Alba, Dolj, Constanța, Mehedinți, Arad, Galați, Vrancea, Buzău, Botoșani, Telorman and Vaslui have expressed support. PM Viorica Dancila and Ministers Rovana Plumb, Carmen Dan, Mihai Fifor, Paul Stanescu and Ioana Bran stand by Dragnea and claim the sentence is political.
“I strongly believe the PSD chairman is innocent and I assure him of all my support for him in leading the party and the Chamber of Deputies – this is the only fair attitude for the benefit of doubt. (…) We will complete de governing programme and our commitments, we remain determined,” PM Dancila said in a release. Viorica Dancila said the High Court judges have ignored one of the Constitutional Court decisions.
Interior Minister, Carmen Dan, argued on Facebook that the ruling in Dragnea’s case “is politicized”.
The Executive Committee’s sitting starts at 16.00h and it is expected that Liviu Dragnea would ask for a vote of confidence from the party members.
Tariceanu: PSD and ALDE will continue the reform of justice
ALDE leader and Senate Speaker, Calin Popescu Tariceanu, has reacted after the sentence on Liviu Dragnea, by saying he still enjoys the benefit of doubt until a final sentence and that PSD and ALDE will continue to promote the necessary reforms of justice and to put an end to the parallel state’s poisonous influence.
“It is a sentence of the first court, meaning that Dragnea still enjoys the benefit of doubt, in force until a final sentence is issued. Regardless of the final sentence, I want to stress the importance to continue the debates and to adopt the needed reforms to put an end to abuses and to the violation of citizens’ rights. I also want to assure (…) that ALDE and PSD will continue to promote the needed reforms to ensure the reform of justice and to put an end to the poisonous influence of the parallel state,” Tariceanu wrote.
