Romania will surpass France this year, from the point of view of maize production, which makes the French newspaper ‘Le Monde’ writes about a market vampirization.
Romania would harvest this year between 14.5 and 15 million tons of maize, compared to only 11.8 million tons in France, which means that Romania will take over the crown as the largest European maize producer, according to an estimate of the General Association of Maize Producers (AGPM), quoted by ‘Le Monde’.
This newspaper points out that French maize production has been affected by spring floods that delayed planting. Then the summer heat dried up the land.
In 2017, Romania reported a total cereal production of nearly 27 million tons, or 1.4 tons per Romanian citizen, with historic records for wheat, peas, barley, sunflower, soybeans, corn, potatoes, grapes and maize.
According to the statistical data, among the member states of the European Union (EU), Romania ranks first in sunflower (depending on the cultivated area and the crop) in 2017, the first in maize as cultivated area, and second in crop, after France. Also, in terms of wheat crop Romania ranks fifth on both the cultivated surface and crop.
