Romanian citizen, sentenced to one year in prison for hacking servers of famous WoW video game

A Romanian citizen who hacked the servers in California of the popular online video game World of Warcraft (WoW) in order to revenge following a dispute with another player has been sentenced to one year in prison in the U.S. on Monday.

Călin Mateiaș, aged 38, from Bucharest, has been extradited to the U.S. after attacking the game’s servers in 2010 by so many requests that the game became inaccessible for thousands of players.

Angry with a player with whom he used to frequently race, the defendant decided to make him lose WoW by cutting servers so that his contender could not access the game anymore,” reads the prosecutor’s documents.

Investigators argue that his deeds have been motivated by “his childish desire to win this game and to see others lose”.

In February this year, Mateiaș pleaded guilty before the Court in Los Angeles, and last month he paid compensations worth USD 30,000 to Blizzard Entertainment, the producer of the game.
