Romanian Florin Badita, founder of an anti-corruption civic platform „Corruption Kills” has been awarded the European Personality of the Year by Euronews and European Business Summit, next to other outstanding European figures, including Emmanuel Macron (European Leader of the Year), Edyta Kocyk(European CEO of the Year), Boyan Slat (European Entrepreneur of the Year,) and Krisztian Imre (European Innovator of the Year).
They were all recognised for their outstanding contribution to their respective fields during the European Leadership Awards on Wednesday.
The winners were then selected by an expert jury of eight, after a public vote, which has run until March 31.
European Parliament President Antonio Tajani also presented a special award in memory of the late Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
The campaign of 29-year-old Florin Badita, who founded Corruption Kills, after the 2015 fire at the Colectiv nightclub in which 64 people died, also helped put an end to the decriminalisation of Romanian corruption cases where damages total less than EUR 45,000 and uncovered several cases of embezzlement. Earlier this year, he was named as one of Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe, Law and Policy.
“We need more transparency so we can investigate” and fight corruption, Badita said in his acceptance speech.
He also called on activists across Europe to collaborate on a common project to help fight fake news.
Badita has raced for this title against actress Emma Watson, entrepreneur Xavier Niel, billionaire businessman Mohed Altrad, top model Edie Campbell, astronomer Michaël Gillon, lawuyer Marcia Willis Stewart, activist András Fekete-Gyor and politician Barbara Nowacka.
