400 European pilots and crew will celebrate Romania’s heroes in the event.

From 3rd to 7th October 2018, the Baia Mare Aerodrome of the Romanian Air Club will host the 5th edition of the Maramureș Balloon Fiesta, an ambitious project that puts Romania for the first time on the European hot air balloons map. Entitled  “100 balloons for Romania” , this year’s edition is dedicated to the Romanian Centenary.

100 hot air balloons from all over Europe, plus entries from Japan and Chile, will gather in Baia Mare for a memorable reunion, with an honest and assumed message of peace and joy: “Happy birthday, Romania! We’re glad you made it!” At the dawn flight session on Sunday, 7th October 2018, all 400 pilots and crew from 28 countries, together with all those present at Baia Mare’s aerodrome, will keep a moments silence in honour of all Europe’s heroes.

The Romanian Centenary coincides with 100 years since the end of the Great War, a moment of great spiritual significance for all Europeans. Through this event, “100 balloons for Romania”, we propose a meeting: a commemoration of all Europe’s heroes at the same time as the celebration of Romania’s Centenary“, says Loredana Ionescu, president of the Association S.E.N.S. “We invite all Romanians to celebrate with us 100 years of Romania, at #thefestivalofjoy, a unique civic project, of European calibre, where the living traditions of Maramures meet the oldest tradition of flight, that of hot air ballooning! We wish to continue to develop this annual event which promotes the natural and cultural richness of Maramures through the memorable experience that only a hot air balloon flight can offer. It’s an irresistible combination.”

The 5 days of the Maramureș Balloon Fiesta will involve tethered and untethered balloon flights, glider flights, crafts workshops, local gastronomy and children’s activities.

Probably the most enjoyable moment for families will be Sunday afternoon’s tethered flight session, from 4pm to 6pm, when all 100 balloons will be on display at the aerodrome, a great open-air display of hot air balloon art, like 100 candles on Romania’s birthday cake!

Thursday, 4th October 2018, is dedicated to pilots and crew. The organisers prepare a full day’s experience for them in rural Maramures, in the area known as the Land of Lapus, starting with the dawn flight at 7am, the most beautiful moment of the day from which to admire the spectacular landscape.
