108 public hospitals and 34 private clinics have unauthorized blood transfusion centres in Romania

There are 108 public hospitals and 34 private clinics in Romania that have unauthorized blood transfusion centres. 19 of them are in Bucharest, the Health Ministry announced on Tuesday, amid scandal of erroneous blood transfusions in two Bucharest hospitals.
11 of these hospitals are public medical units. “CC Iliescu” Cardiovascular Institute and “Marius Nasta” Lung Institute are on the list, while at the Elias University Emergency Hospital there are no information provided by the Public Health Direction.
The ministry has asked the information from all Public Health Directions in the country and compared the results with the units that receive blood and haematic products from the National Institute of Hematology and from the Transfusion Centres. The results reveal that 108 public hospitals and 34 private ones are functioning without authorized transfusion centres.
Therefore, Health minister Vlad Voiculescu ordered that until August 12 the public health directions should check all unauthorized transfusion units and would take steps to authorize them in maximum three months.
