21C expected in Romania on Wednesday

The unusual winter, with record high temperatures, is lingering in Romania.

There are some localities where January can bring temperatures above 20 degrees. In the last century it happened quite rarely, but after 2000 the situation changed and January was increasingly warm.

The National Meteorology Administration forecast shows that it will be +20 C in Bucharest on Wednesday and Thursday, while Oravița, Calafat, Câmpina, Târgoviște, Curtea de Argeș and Craiova are among the few cities where it can be more than 20 degrees in January.

At the beginning of 2023, there were also places like Rădăuți where there were more than 20 degrees for the first time.

The highest temperature recorded in the country in 2023: +21.3 C in Pâtârlagele, surpassing by 1.3 C a record from 1993. In Târgoviște it was +21.1 C, in Câmpina it was +20.8 C, and at Curtea de Argeș it was +20.6 C. Places where, for the first time, temperatures above +20 C were measured in January: Rădăuți, Botoşani, Pitesti, Târgu Ocna.

Snow and blizzard alert in the mountains

On the other hand, the weather seems to be more winter-like in the mountains. Meteorologists have issued an information of mountain blizzard, sleet and snow and wind that will blow at more than 110 km per hour. At the same time, a yellow wind code will be in effect until Tuesday evening.

A Code Yellow alert  is in effect until 5:00 PM on Monday and will be in effect until 10:00 PM on Tuesday. In the Southern and Western Carpathians and locally in Banat, the wind will intensify with speeds of 60…80 km/h. At altitudes above 1700 m, gusts will exceed 100 km/h, there will be blizzards and low visibility.

Also from today at 17, a meteorological information comes into force, valid until Thursday at 20:00, which aims at quantitatively moderate precipitation, wind intensification, blizzard in the high mountain area. In the mentioned interval, especially in the western half of the country it will rain, in the mountains there will be mixed precipitation, and at altitudes higher than 1700 m it will temporarily snow. The amounts of accumulated precipitation will exceed 20…25 l/sq.m., and in the Western and Southern Carpathians in limited areas 50 l/sq.m.
