After initially in the morning it had said there were no Romanian among the victims of the coach accident in Venice, Italy, late this evening, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that four Romanians were actually among the victims of the tragedy that claimed 21 lives. Radu Filip, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the four Romanians died.

The four victims are part of the same family, according to Digi24 sources. It’s about two brothers and their parents. Filip did not specify whether the Romanians who died in the accident were tourists or lived in Italy.

MAE said though that there are no Romanians among the injured.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of Romania in Rome and the Consulate General of Romania in Trieste urgently requested additional information from the Italian authorities regarding the citizenship, identity and state of health of the victims of the accident on Tuesday evening.

A mobile consular team from the Consulate General of Romania in Trieste went to the scene, as an emergency, to obtain more information about the identity of all the affected people.

Following the steps taken, permanently, during the night of October 3 to 4, 2023, as well as during today’s day by the Embassy of Romania in Rome and the Consulate General of Romania in Trieste, the MAE states that among the victims of the road accident there are also four Romanian citizens.

The procedure to identify all the victims was carried out with difficulty, considering the circumstances of the accident and its seriousness, the release states.

At the same time, the MFA informs that the mobile consular team from the General Consulate of Romania in Trieste also went to the medical unit where the dead bodies were transported to connect with family members, in order to provide specific consular assistance in such situations.

Meanwhile, in Italy, the investigation continues to establish the cause of the accident. The bus was only a year old, and colleagues of the driver, who also died, say he was experienced and conscientious.

In the images captured by the surveillance cameras, it can be seen that the coach was not speeding. The way it suddenly changes direction can indicate a technical fault or a health problem of the driver. It was an electric bus, meaning on batteries. Unfortunately, the batteries caught fire on impact.

Many of those who survived are alive today thanks to the courage and quick intervention of two young immigrants who were working on a nearby construction site. The men entered the coach before it caught fire and pulled as many people as they could from the beasts before the firemen arrived. The tourists were returning to Venice.
