Many Romanians living abroad would want to return home, but corruption, the mentality and low living standard in the country are the main barriers that prevent them from doing so, according to a survey presented on Tuesday at Alba Iulia in a Re>patriot meeting, the first conference conducted by this project in Romania.
According to the survey, the main reason for emigration were related to the material conditions, Romanians being attracted by the high living standards in the countries they migrated, but longing for home would make them return home, said Felix Tataru, Founder of GMP Group, who presented some of the findings of a survey commissioned by the Romanian Business Leaders (RBL) about the Romanian emigrants and conducted by Open-I Research.
“Out of those surveyed so far, 70% want to return home. (…). Nearly 40% will return in three years, 20% this year. Corruption is the main barrier that would make them refrain from returning to the country and the second one is the low standard of living in Romania. But why would they return? They would return in order to be with their loved ones, to spend their retirement years in the country and because they saw that the living standard in Romania has begun to improve. (…). Many of them say they would invest in the country, in tourism and agriculture,” Felix Tataru said.
He added that almost half, 48%, believe that the situation in Romania might improve in the coming years.
