96 people have asked for the Romanian state’s protection since early this year, according to the General Inspectorate for Immigration. The asylum seekers are mostly men aged 18 to 34 and come from Pakistan, Syria and Iraq.
The requests are analysed by the immigration officers from the Regional Accommodation Centres for Asylum Seekers. There are six such units in Romania: in Bucharest, Timișoara, Giurgiu, Rădăuți, Galați and Maramureș.
According to the Romanian Immigration Bureau, a foreign citizen is entitled to the refugee statute on extremely grounded reasons related to persecution due to religion, nationality or race.
At present, there are 2,600 beneficiaries of a type of international protection registered in our country.
