A nine-year-old girl from Timis county died of measles. She had not been vaccinated and had been admitted at the Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Timisoara in the past two weeks due to respiratory deficiency. This is the 24th case of death caused by measles in Romania.
Most of the victims were actually from Timis county.
Romania has been fighting the measles epidemic since September last year. Since then up to March 31, 4,025 cases have ben reported, and 24 deaths. The country has also run out of anti-measles vaccines. Ten county public health directions had no dose of ROR vaccine in February. The ROR protects children agains measles, mumps and rubella.
Health minister Florian Bodog has recently said that 115,000 vaccines would reach Romania by May 10. He stated on Tuesday that the first 10,000 doses will reach the country this week and will be prevalently directed to the ten counties where the vaccines are missing.
