Air traffic controller dies at work in Bucharest following heart attack

A Romanian air traffic controller employed at Romatsa, the trade union of the Romanian Air Traffic Services Administration, has died at work on Monday around 6 p.m. The controller, aged 49, would have died from a heart attack.

The air traffic was not affected.

There are around 600 air traffic controllers in Romania. This work involves a major amount of stress.

According to Romatsa employees, before 1989 air traffic controllers could retire at 57 years old, and at 52yo upon request. Now, the retirement age limit is 65 years old.

Romatsa’s air traffic controllers have been on strike many times in the past years, demanding higher salaries, working conditions and poor management.
