The National Anti-corruption Directorate has asked for prison sentences against former premier Victor Ponta and his friend, former minister and senator Dan Sova in the Turceni-Rovinari file. Anti-corruption prosecutors accuse the two politicians that they would have taken advantage of some arrangements with the management of the energy company.

The last hearing in this file took place on Tuesday.

DNA’s charge is that Ponta and Sova, as lawyers, would have received money for legal counseling granted to the two state companies although they had their own jurists.

Dan Sova is charged with three crimes of abetment in abuse of office with obtaining undue benefits for another person, forgery under private signature, tax evasion in continued form and money laundering.

Victor Ponta is charged with forgery under private signature (27 deeds), abetment in tax evasion in continued form, money laundering, committed as lawyer representing his private legal practice.

More precisely, Victor Ponta is accused of cashing in money from Sova’s private law firm without providing any service.

Investigators claim that the money, mounting to RON 200,000, are actually a commission in exchange of Ponta’s helping Sova to obtain contracts with the two energy companies, Rovinari and Turceni.

The file has been sent into court in 2015.

Prosecutors have asked that Sova should be sentenced to prison, for a maximum prison sentence and that he would be banned from taking any public positions. DNA also wants Sova to pay compensations of over RON 111,000.

In Ponta’s case, prosecutors have asked for a medium prison sentence and they also want the former PM to pay compensations worth RON 50,000 and to be seized of RON 260,000.
