Arrests flooded in this weekend
More corruption files came into the light this week, pointing out to heavy local leaders, ex-managers of state institutions or businessmen involvement.
Plenty of arrest followed. Five persons were arrested on Friday in the file of Timisoara County Council leader Titu Bojin, among whom a county councilor, ex-CFR Calatori manager Teodor Gavris and a local businessman George Didila. As for Bojin, prosecutors decided to place him under judicial review for 60 days until February 8, 2015.
Another sounding file of the week was related to money laundering and public funds embezzlement in road and railway infrastructure contracts. Owner of Euroconstruct 98 trading manager Dan Besciu was placed under house arrest also on Friday along with Joseph Horneger, owner of Swietelsky Railway Constructions Ltd and other two managers. Prosecutors claim they were set up an organized criminal group to embezzle huge sums of money coming from Romanian Railway Freight and from the National Company of Roads and Highways (CNADR). The prejudice is estimated for RON 34 million.
Searches at CNADR
Prosecutors conducted 30 searches in Bucharest and other six counties, including at CNADR headquarters, in a corruption file related to some car service and maintenance contracts.
Searches were conducted at the place of Iasi local councilor Marius Eugen Ostaficiuc (Social Democrat Party), who is also deputy commercial manager at Iasi Regional Roads and Bridges Direction.
EUR 1.4 M seized from ex-CFR manager fortune
The Supreme Court finally ruled to seize RON 6.3 M (EUR 1.4 M) from the former manager of the Romanian Railway Company, CFR Calatori, Alexandru Noaptes. Magistrates claim the amount represent illegal fortune. Alexandru Noaptes and other two former directors of the company were prosecuted for a EUR 700.000 fraud on August 2010.
