A serious accident took place in Venice. At least 21 people, including two children, died after a bus fell off a bridge in Venice, in northern Italy, on Tuesday evening, the mayor of the city, Luigi Brugnaro, announced, quoted by the Italian daily La Repubblica. The red emergency plan was activated and more than a hundred firefighters intervened at the scene of the accident. The Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) announced that, from the first information, there are no Romanian citizens among the victims.

Among the victims already identified are 5 Ukrainian citizens, a German citizen and the bus driver, a 40-year-old Italian. Of the 18 injured, 5 are in serious condition, according to Italian authorities. The causes of the tragedy are not known at this time. One of the initial hypotheses was that a fire broke out on board the coach before it fell into the void, but this was refuted by the testimonies collected by the rescuers. Another theory is that the driver was sick.

The bus driver belonged to “Martini”, a transport company of Italian nationality.

According to Corriere del Veneto, a group of Ukrainians and some Germans were on board the coach. The number of injured rises to 18, some of them in serious condition. At least 21 people died, including two children and a teenager. The dynamics of the accident have not yet been established: the bus left the road on the Vempa overpass, broke the protective parapet and plunged into the void near the railway, after a flight of about thirty meters. The methane fueled vehicle reportedly caught fire after touching electrical cables.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that until this moment there is no information about the existence of Romanian citizens among the victims of the accident in Italy. “Until this moment, there is no information about the existence of Romanian citizens among the victims of the accident. The representatives of the consular office maintain contact with the local Italian authorities, being prepared to provide consular assistance depending on the requests, according to the legal powers”, the MFA transmitted. The cited source specified that, until this moment, no requests for consular assistance have been registered at the level of the diplomatic mission.
