The construction of the future bridge over the Tisa River between Romania and Ukraine, located on the outskirts of the municipality of Sighetu Marmaţiei, is at an advanced stage, with over 50% of the works being completed, informed the president of the Maramures County Council (CJ), Gabriel Zetea, in a post on his Facebook page.

The new road bridge, an investment estimated at 25 million euros, from EU funding, will facilitate the development of trade with Ukraine.

Road traffic between Romania and Ukraine is carried out over a wooden and metal bridge, built in early 2000, which has a single direction of traffic and two pedestrian lanes. With the beginning of the war in Ukraine, road and passenger traffic increased, and the structure of the bridge is affected, the facility not being designed for heavy tonnage traffic.
Ukraine also temporarily maintained the connection with Romania by broad gauge railway, access to the country being made via Valea Vişeului and Câmpulung la Tisa. Currently, the railway authority in Ukraine has suspended rail traffic to Romania through the two border points.
