Bulgaria to erect fence at Romanian border to counter spread of African swine fever

Clearing of land to enable the building of a fence at the Romanian border has begun, to prevent the movement of wild boar into Bulgaria as a measure against African swine fever.

There have been hundreds of outbreaks of African swine fever in Romania.

Speaking on July 23, Bulgarian Agriculture Minister Roumen Porozhanov said that several steps were being taken to prevent the spread of African swine fever in the country, but added that this would not be easy, sofiaglobe.com reports.

Meanwhile, on July 23 tensions were continuing over the ovine rinderpest situation in the Strandzha area of Bulgaria, the same source informs.

The National Sanitary, Veterinary and Food Safety Authority of Romania (ANSVSA) announced on Saturday two new cases of African swine fever virus infection in Giurgeni commune, Ialomita County, with the authorities intervening urgently. ANSVSA specified that two households were placed under official supervision and restrictions were applied to the movement of persons, animals, products, by-products and means of transport, the animals were slaughtered, Romanian media report.

The length of Romania’s border with Bulgaria is 631.3 km, of which 139.1 km is land border, 470.0 km river border and 22.2 km maritime border.
