Businessman Dan Adamescu asks to be released on parole

Businessman Dan Adamescu filed a request for release on parole at the District 4 Court in Bucharest, after serving five months in prison in the sentence of four years and four months received in a corruption file.

“Dan Adamescu filed through his lawyers a request for the release on parole on October 24, considering that, based on article 72 in the Criminal Code, the period from June 5, 2014 to June 22, 2015 have been deducted. Mr. Adamescu served one third of the total sentence, already being imprisoned for 534 days (preventive measures plus the sentence) out in a total of 1,467 days (four years and four months), with the condition stipulated by the article 100 line 1 in the Criminal Code being observed,” reads a press release sent by the Adamescu family’s PR officer, Mihaela Petrovan.

The above-mentioned source says that Adamescu is serving a semi-open prison regime at Jilava penitentiary, but he was not medically able to attend the programmes in the penitentiary due to several heart, neurologic and diabetes affections. However, the source argues that Dan Adamescu had a good behavior according to the rules of the detention regime, “with no sanctions/deviations reported.”

“At present, Dan Adamescu is a an extremely precarious health condition, which prompted to his being admitted at Floreasca Hospital, where doctors are carefully monitoring his over 15 serious diseases, which got worsen during detention. According to the law, 68-year-old Adamescu has the right to a prison sentence cut by two thirds,” informs the press release.

Dan Adamescu, founder of The Nova Group and investor at “Romania libera” newspaper, was sentenced to four years and four months in prison by the Supreme Court in a final ruling on May 27, 2016. The corruption file is related to some favorable court rulings in several insolvency files. Adamescu is charged with interceding with the judges for several insolvency files. Four magistrates got sentences in the same case ranging from three years and four months in jail and one year and two months.
