The elected mayor of Baia Mare, Catalin Chereches, will be released from prison and placed under house arrest, following a decision of the Cluj Court of Appeal issued on Wednesday. According to the sentence pronounced on Wednesday in the file, the judges ordered the immediate release of the defendant, if he is not arrested in another file.
The court has decided that the accused will not leave his home in Baia Mare, and that during the house arrest he is to meet certain obligations.
These include the fact that the mayor of Baia Mare has to appear before the criminal investigation body, before the judge for rights and freedoms, before the preliminary chamber judge or before the court, whenever called.
Chereches is not allowed to communicate directly or indirectly with the witnesses in the file in which it is judged.
On April 27, 2016 the Mayor of Baia Mare, Catalin Chereches, was taken into custody following a sentence of the Cluj Court for bribe taking in continued form. He was re-elected in the June 5 local elections and won another term as mayor with 70.14% of the cast votes.
