CCR rejects civic initiative for mayors to be elected in two rounds

The Constitutional Court has rejected the citizens’ initiative requesting that mayors are elected in two rounds, an initiative supported by 140,000 signatures, of which 120,000 validated by the city halls and submitted to the CCR along with the document.

CCR has rejected the initiative on reason that there are not enough signatures to amend the legislation, i.e. 100,000 signatures were needed from at least one quarter of the counties in Romania. Another condition was to collect 5,000 signatures from each county, which was not met, reports.

The ruling is final and binding and is to be communicated to the Senate.

The civic initiative was submitted by the Save Romania Union (USR).
