Children Depict Plastic Recycling in Eco Art Exhibit at Parliament Palace
The Palace of the Parliament is hosting, starting on October 7, 2024, an interesting exhibition of drawings and graphics about recycling and with the objective of setting as a national priority the collection for recycling of flexible plastic, mainly used in packaging in the food industry.
The works of art exhibited at the Parliament Palace are signed by 50 students from six pre-university educational institutions in Bucharest who participated in the first edition of the educational project “Recycling is everything!”, organized by Nestlé in collaboration with Green Resources Management, the National Federation of Parents (FNaP) – Edupart and Sector 6 City Hall.
“Through this initiative, Nestlé wants to expand education and awareness campaigns at national level, focusing through this campaign on the selective collection of flexible plastic packaging waste, thus supporting the achievement of the national recycling targets assumed at the level of the European Union. We would be very happy if, following this initiative from the Romanian Parliament, we would start paying special attention to the development and implementation of a national approach for the collection, sorting and recycling of this flexible plastic packaging waste, which requires a special approach”, explains Irina Siminenco, Corporate Affairs Manager, Nestlé Romania.
To be successful in the initiative to promote a flexible plastic recycling industry, the first steps involve educating the population about the special regime required for the selective collection of polyethylene packaging or other types of plastic films from the food industry. Unlike PETs, polyethylene packaging is mostly “dirty” after consuming the food. In other words, being in contact with food products of various consistencies, they retain traces of these foods. To increase the degree of recycling, before being deposited in the collection containers, these packages should be cleaned or even washed. On the other hand, this process could be taken over by a specially designed industrial facility for the recycling of these flexible packaging, but that would involve large-scale investments.
The challenge is that not a large enough amount of flexible plastic packaging is collected, which calls for a nationwide approach where consumers are encouraged to take such recyclable waste to dedicated containers instead of throwing them to the household waste.
At this point, Nestlé has already intervened in collaboration with Green Resources Management, the National Federation of Parents (FNaP) – Edupart and the City Hall of Sector 6, launching the project “Recycling is everything!” with the objective of increasing the understanding of the separate collection symbols on packaging in the food industry and explaining the process of collecting and recycling packaging waste.
A selection of these works is now on display at the Palace of Parliament and is well worth a visit because the children’s graphic works reflect their desire for a cleaner environment, something that political and administrative decision makers at all levels need to heed account.
